The Story Behind Midsommar
In late June, the light lingers over Sweden. Flowers are gathered for crowns, greenery wraps around the maypole, and families and friends meet outdoors to celebrate the arrival of summer.
The table is set with new potatoes, herring and strawberries. People sing, dance and stay outside a little longer, enjoying an evening that does not seem ready to end.
There is also an old Midsummer belief. Pick seven different flowers and place them beneath your pillow, and perhaps you will dream of someone you might one day love. A few flowers gathered on a summer evening become a wish for what lies ahead.
