The Story Behind Lucia
Long ago, December 13 was regarded in Swedish folk tradition as the longest and darkest night of the year. Winter still held the landscape, and old beliefs gave this night a special place in the calendar.
The day also carries the name of Saint Lucy of Syracuse, whose feast day fell on December 13. Over the centuries, Swedish customs and the saint’s story became part of a celebration with many different influences.
Today, a familiar song begins on a dark December morning.
A procession dressed in white slowly enters the room. Lucia leads the way with a crown of lights. Faces brighten as the singing fills the space. Afterwards, people gather for coffee and saffron buns, sharing a warm moment before returning to their day.
Outside, winter is far from over. The nights are still long and spring seems distant.
Perhaps that is what makes Lucia special. It is not a celebration held after the darkness has passed. It is a way of welcoming light while winter is still here.
The bracelet brings that feeling together in white, red and golden tones.
